Located in the South Asian peninsula, just 32km away from the great nation of India is an Island. Often referred by travellers as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”, this little Island paradise is known as Sri Lanka. Some of the great pioneers in travel have documented much about the rich culture and heritage that is still preserved to this day. Ibn Battuta, Marco Polo were some of the great historians who patronized this land, among many others. Serendib, Seylan, Ceylon and now Sri Lanka, this land has gone through many name changes and been under many regimes; the last being the rule of the British.

Being a Sinhales Buddhist nature, Sri Lanka has a large history and culture that has entangled itself with the life of the Buddha. In fact, there are many records and ancient text depicting the journeys of the Buddha to this country. The ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are beautifully preserved WHO world heritage sites for the architectural and artistic marvels they hold among themselves. These great cities were once the capitals of some of the greatest kings this nation has ever known. The great rock citadel of Sigiriya is another fascinating example of technological excellence, splendour, and ingenuity of the kings of old. One must simply not fail to visit this great lion’s rock.

While history is imbued in these places, Sri Lanka is no way just an ancient civilization. The trade capital which is Colombo is nothing but ancient. The many sky scrapers and shopping destinations add to the already busy streets of the metropolis. Many Sri Lankans are naturally friendly and inclined to help you out at any given moment. The “Sri Lankan companionship” is something they pride themselves with. The five-star hotels, as well as smaller boutique hotels and even motels, will only add to your already amazing experience, that is Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan local cuisine is another area that you must not miss when you are here. Whether they are from street vendors on the busy streets of Pettah or five-star cuisines from some of the greatest hotel chains, the food is fantastic.

Whether you are just in the mood to chill and relax, or you want to get out there and trek through the hill country or the vast jungles, Sri Lanka will certainly not disappoint anyone who lands on her beautiful shores.
